Learning to fly with the Rockhampton Aero Club:

Whether you want to learn fly for fun, business or a career in aviation the Rockhampton Aero Club is the place to learn.  Our professional staff have extensive industry experience in both charter operations and flying training which means you will receive training that is closely related to how aircraft are actually operated in commercial operations.

Whether you want to learn for one lesson, go solo just once or obtain a licence, we can train you right up to the Command Instrument Rating for flight in Multi-engine aircraft through any type of weather.

General Information about Learning to fly:

The following points outline the individual steps and relavent information for obtaining your private pilots licence.

If, after reading the information you have any further queries, please call the office on 07) 4922 4596 and ask to speak with one of our experienced flying instructors. They will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

1. EDUCATIONAL STANDARD

No formal educational standard is necessary to obtain an Australian Pilots Licence.

2. TRIAL INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT

If you are undecided about learning to fly and would like to “test the water first”, we suggest you take a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). This trial flight is an abridged first lesson starting from $130.00.  For about 20 minutes you experience the thrill of flying an aircraft and if like most people be completely convinced you want to continue training.  In which case, the introductory flight will count towards your private pilot licence training.

The TIF puts you under no obligation to continue with further training.

3. AVIATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION AND STUDENT PILOT LICENCE

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will allow you to fly for a short time before requiring you to take a medical as part of issuing a student pilot licence.  A straight forward medical examination is needed and can be conducted by an approved Designated Aviation Medical Examiner.  In Rockhampton one of our Aero Club committee members is the CASA approved D.A.M.E. and will be happy to help you with your Aviation Medical. He will also assist you with any questions you may have about pre-existing medical conditions or other aspects of Aviation Medicine.

5. TAILORING YOUR FLYING TRAINING

We fit in with your budget.  We cater for all students from full time to those who can only afford to fly every second or third week.  We are open seven days and will tailor a program of training to suit your needs and budget.

6. FLYING TRAINING TO FIRST SOLO

Flying training will commence with basic skills of flying. Initially you will learn to fly in our Cessna 150 VH-RZN and your lessons will consist of learning to control the aircraft in the air, climb, descend, turn and once you have command of all that, you will learn to take off and land.  You will not be sent solo until you are confident and competent to do so and one of our senior instructors will assess your ability.

7. THEORY FOR PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE

There are four basic exams which must be completed.  These are straight forward multiple choice tests and are not difficult.  They are the Pre Solo Exam, Pre Area Solo Exam, Basic Aeronautical Knowledge and the Private Pilot Licence Exam.

8. FLYING TRAINING TO RECREATIONAL PILOT LICENCE (RPL)

Flying training will continue with exercises away from the field preparing you for the (RPL).  Once you have passed this stage you are permitted to take passengers with you either in the circuit area or to either of the training areas near Rockhampton.  One of the greatest experiences of your life will be flying a passenger out and around Yeppoon and Emu Park.

9. FLYING TRAINING FOR THE PRIVATE PILOTS LICENCE (PPL).

Navigation flying training will normally be undertaken flying the Cessna 172 however some training can be completed in a Cessna 182.  It will give you your cross country experience to complete your training and prepare you for your PPL test. You will see a lot of Central Queensland and land at a variety of airfields both bitumen and dirt.

Once you have obtained your PPL, you may wish to expand your capabilities.  We can offer training for a Night Rating or endorsements for a Constant Speed Unit, Retractable Undercarriage, Formation Flying or even multi-engine aircraft.  We can also train you for a Commercial Pilot Licence if you wish to make flying a career.  This does not have to be decided until you have completed your PPL.
